University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Public Health - Office of Community Based Public Health

LOCATION: Little Rock, AR, U.S.A.

ORGANIZATION TYPE: Education

FOCUS AREA: Children / Families, Education, Health Care Delivery, Public Health, Public Policy, Race / Ethnicity

HEALTH EQUITY INITIATIVES: We have conducted multiple screenings of Unnatural Causes in our state. Many new opportunities have emerged as a result of this work such as a cross-sector, community-based initiative addressing jobs, housing and health; research on how to address experiences of discrimination for pregnant African American women; discussions with the city board of directors about HIA and opportunities to partner on cross-sector policy and programming; and research on how to increase the cultural humility, sensitivity, competency of physicians. We have also begun planning for a Center for Health Equity and continuing our previous work partnering with grassroots community-based organizations using participatory approaches in research, public health practice, and service learning; and teaching about social determinants, racism, privilege, etc. in our masters and doctoral classes.

ACTIVITIES WITH UNNATURAL CAUSES CAMPAIGN:
- Host a screening event featuring UNNATURAL CAUSES
- Engage in media outreach
- Use the series and materials in trainings or classes
- Post and share information about the series with members and constituents
