ORGANIZATION TYPE: Education FOCUS AREA: Environment / Land Use, Health Care Delivery, Housing / Neighborhoods, Mental health / Psychology, Public Policy, Race / Ethnicity, Social Inclusion HEALTH EQUITY INITIATIVES: The CIHDR is one of eight NIH-supported Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities research nationwide. Our specific focus is on African-American women's breast cancer etiology and outcome disparities related to social environment factors. We collaborate with three other U Chicago Medical Center/Hospital-based programs/units (RWJF Finding Answers Program; Program for Health Disparities Research & Training; Urban Health Initiative) and with the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force (a broad coalition of providers, payers, advocates and governmental agencies). All are relatively new organizations, and we are still in the developmental phases of working collaboratively towards equity in access, treatment and outcomes; supporting and disseminating research to influence policy makers and improve practice; or creating curriculum and training programs.
